Overview
The one-year Andrology Fellowship at Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba and the University of Manitoba provides advanced clinical and surgical training in managing male infertility, male sexual dysfunction, testosterone deficiency, chronic orchalgia, BPH, and general men’s health.
Faculty
Premal Patel
MD, FRCSC - Program Director
Dr. Patel serves as an Assistant Professor in the Section of Urology at the University of Manitoba. He received specialized Fellowship training in Male Infertility, Microsurgery, and Sexual Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Patel is recognized for his contributions to Urology and Male Reproduction, with numerous peer-reviewed publications. He actively participates in national guideline committees focusing on erectile dysfunction, male infertility, and testosterone deficiency. Dr. Patel uniquely offers expertise in male cosmetic urology and genital refinement surgery, making him Manitoba’s sole specialist in Male Infertility and Sexual Medicine with these additional qualifications. He completed his Urology Residency at the University of Manitoba and earned his Medical Degree from the University of Calgary. Dr. Patel is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
Jay Nayak
MD, FRSCS, FACS
Dr. Jay Nayak serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Manitoba, where he currently holds the role of Program Director for the Section of Urology Residency Program and has previously served as Research Director. He completed his urologic surgical residency at the University of Manitoba and a prestigious two-year fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Dr. Nayak is extensively involved in national committees and has contributed significantly to the field with numerous peer-reviewed publications. His expertise lies in male urologic cancers and men’s health issues. Dr. Nayak is recognized as a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Surgeons, and he is Board Certified by the American Board of Urology.
Robert Bard
MD, FRCSC
Dr. Robert Bard is a distinguished Urologist with over 30 years of experience in the field. He completed his Urologic surgery residency at the University of Manitoba, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of urological conditions and surgical techniques. Dr. Bard further specialized in Functional Urology, gaining advanced training and expertise in this area. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, advancing urological research, and contributing to the medical community through his extensive knowledge and experience.
Application Process
One position is available annually on a competitive basis in the Andrology Fellowship.
To be eligible for the Andrology Fellowship, applicants must have completed a residency program in urology and be eligible for a Manitoba medical license.

Curriculum
Clinical Training
As a fellow at Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba and the University of Manitoba, you will engage in comprehensive patient care with progressive independence in surgical cases under direct supervision.
Surgical Volume
- Erectile Dysfunction: Full spectrum of medical and surgical management, with over 75 prostheses performed annually.
- Peyronie’s Disease: Non-surgical (intralesional injections, traction) and surgical management, including over 75 cases of plication/incision & grafting.
- Male Infertility: Comprehensive evaluation and treatment including hormonal manipulation, microsurgical varicocele repairs (over 50 annually), vasovasostomies (VV’s), vasoepididymostomies (VE’s), MicroTESE, sperm retrievals (TESE/MESA), and TURED.
- Chronic Orchalgia: Full spectrum of medical and surgical management, including microscopic denervation of the spermatic cord, epididymectomy, and orchiectomy.
- BPH: Over 250 procedures annually, including Greenlight PVP, MIST, and HoLEP.
- Office-Based Procedure: Circumcisions, hydrocelectomy, spermatocelectomy, dorsal slit, frenulectomy, and more.
Call Frequency
As an andrology fellow, you will not be scheduled for on-call duties.
Didactic Training
Participation in conferences, academic rounds, journal clubs, and one-on-one instruction is integral to the fellowship experience.
Research Training
Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba actively supports a robust research program. Fellows are expected to actively pursue research projects, and many opportunities are available within the fellowship.
Teaching Opportunities
Fellows are involved in teaching medical students and residents on service. Those interested in education have opportunities to deliver didactic lectures to residents.
Evaluation
Your progress and development are closely monitored through regular evaluations by supervising faculty members. These evaluations ensure you acquire the necessary knowledge and technical skills to meet program expectations. You will also have regular opportunities to provide feedback on the faculty to ensure your educational needs are met.
